I read The Tegen Cave and the prologue hooked me instantly, so it was read in two days. I'm not a fan of spiders, however author Goss has a heroine whose parents worked in the field of Arachnology, thus made spiders seem more lovable than what we normally think. More like crickets, if crickets released lethal poison. And during her parent's scientific study of spiders, it soon became known that their daughter was immune to all deadly spider venom. This sets the tone for book one, and is about as much as one needs to know to read book two, since it is a stand alone story and quickly catches readers up on Sara Jones who becomes Sally Jablon in this second of the series.

At the end of book one, our heroine learns she is a Tegen, and is adjusting to her unusual lifestyle while remaining committed to destroying an organized drug crime empire, run by her former lover, Conner Crussett. Her newfound ability of self-healing is just one of many Tegen tools that helps her track down and fight a sordid lot of criminals to whom death means nothing.

Now in Baton Rouge, with a new hair color, color contacts, and adopted southern twang, Sally is attempting to wipe out drug selling criminals whom she hopes will lead to demise of the Crussett family business. She has found a new romance with Brett, who is also a Tegen. Their love is bound by many things, but only Tegens understand all the rituals needed for them to sustain life, which strengthens their connection. But her mission in Louisiana get precariously sidetracked when Brett sends an out of control Tegen to accompany Sally in Baton Rouge. Out of control is putting it mildly as this young Tegen uses her venom infused nails to wipe out anyone she doesn't like. A punishable Tegen rule is to never use death by venom unless one is in a life threatening situation that cannot be survived by any other means.

When Conner Crussett shows up in Baton Rouge, Sally has to convince him she is NOT Sara, even though this is not an easy task as they were madly in love for several years. Sally is now the love "interest" of several men, whom she is using for more information and hoping they never realize her true identity. There are several twists in this story, and I could not figure out the villains even as I neared the end. What I believe was bound to happen, did not, so that was a head shaker. Without adding a spoiler, let me just say your mouth may drop open when stubborn, strong-headed, Sara Jones/Sally Jablon does what she has always done: Takes matters into her own hands. I cannot imagine what will happen in book three, but am looking forward to see how our heroine gets herself out of this one.
