The Nurse Mare's Tale is told from the perspective of a horse named Sadie, who is placed in servitude to feed other mare's horses with her milk. Like many of Marta Moran Bishop's stories, this book takes an unflinching look at the problematic things we sometimes do in society in pursuit of profits. In this case, it's the equine industry and the practice of using nurse mares.

Nurse mares are bred for the sole purpose of providing milk to more "desirable" foals, such as racehorse foals. Their own foals are often treated as throwaways in the industry. The industry maintains that the practice is necessary, while equine rights activists condemn the practice. Throwaway foals are sometimes slaughtered, and the mares themselves are often repeatedly re-bred with little opportunity to properly heal. There is a huge profit incentive for thoroughbred farmers to use nurse mares in raising their foals.

Before reading The Nurse Mare's Tale, I knew a little about the industry and the lengths it goes to in order to maximize profitability, pushing the boundaries of humane animal treatment. Mares are sometimes kept under artificial light 24/7 early in the spring to influence their reproductive cycle, for example. Bishop's book raised my awareness of issues to a new level, and at times, it was difficult to continue reading for that reason. Horses are sentient beings and treating them as if they aren't is disturbing.

It's important reading, however, because it raises awareness of the treatment of these beautiful creatures on whose backs fortunes are made. Awareness of the issues is the first step in cultivating positive change.

Bishop's book is beautifully written, and she weaves in factual information in such a way that it comes across as a natural narrative. The lessons she presents are artfully delivered through Sadie's eyes.

Readers who are sensitive to the plight of animals or who want to know more about the horse industry will find this book deeply moving. At times, it is touching, and at other times, it's sad. Regardless, its message is an importan

BARBARA FRANCES OUTDID HERSELF WITH HER CHILDREN'S BOOK LOTTIE'S ADVENTURE: FACING THE MONSTER. A FABULOUS CHAPTER BOOK

Lottie's Adventure: Facing The Monster, is an action-packed children's book written especially for ages 8 through 14. Children will enjoy this exciting read while also improving their reading skills. Twenty-nine chapters filled with twists and turns keep kids reading to discover the outcome.

Lottie, a lively ten-year old Hispanic girl, longs for something new and different in her life. Her summers up to this point have all been, more or less, the same. Then the arrival of a magical letter and a TV newscast transforms her vacation time in a high adventure.

Her great adventure includes trying to relate to a cold, estranged, and rich grandmother, freeing a kidnapped ten-year-old African American boy from a locked room, hiding him in a safe place, and then fleeing with him from a kidnapper who is always just a step or two behind.

A New Hero Is Born

Lottie is my kind of people. A real person. Caring, smart, savvy. She may be only a kid, but she's a great role model for anybody. And she has the most interesting, sometimes kind of scary, adventures. And she meets weird people, funny people, wacky people, serious people. Sometimes she gets herself in a pickle, but she always rises to the occasion and figures out how to get out of it. She doesn't reject the kindness of strangers either.

More than anything, Lottie is saturated with decency. She's doesn't have to be in control all the time. She can be vulnerable. She can be hurt. But she likes herself no matter what. And she likes people. All people.

If you liked A Wrinkle in Time, you'll like Lottie's Adventures as well.

DAW, Austin, Texas

It's an exciting thriller that makes you want to keep on reading.

Adam Lubbers, age 12

While reading Barbara Frances’ chapter book Lottie’s Adventure: Facing the Monster, I was swept back to the books of my childhood. A place where tweens helped each other and became heroes without the use of make-believe or magic brooms. Just plain old smarts, ingenuity, and integrity.

I was engrossed in the story of Lottie, a Hispanic girl, as she helped Charles Ray a black boy, who had been kidnapped escape and confront the bad guy, outsmarting him, while facing their own fears. The friendship that grew between the two was a lesson in how people all want the same things out of life regardless of their upbringing, race, or nationality.

It is a compelling and wonderful tale that I’d recommend to both adults and the tween alike.

TAKE A ROMP THROUGH THE SWAMPS & MANSIONS OF THE 1980'S SOUTH. SHADOW'S WAY - BY BARBARA FRANCES WILL BREAK YOUR HEART & HAUNT YOUR MIND - A MURDER MYSTERY & MADNESS

Prepare to be spellbound. Barbara Frances' long-awaited third novel is available NOW! Shadow's Way, takes you to the coastal, deep South, where the past and the present mingle in a gothic tale of insanity, murder, and sexual intrigue.

You'll meet the beautiful Elaine Chauvier, former actress and proprietor of Shadow's Way, her family's antebellum home; the esteemed Archbishop Andre Figurant and his fallen identical twin, Bastien; newly arrived Ophelia and Rudy, here to explore their Chauvier roots and their ties to Shadow's Way; and the mysterious Madame Claudine. Under a veneer of piety and graciousness, i.e., the questions: What is good? What is evil? What is reality?

Elaine Chauvier ran a bed and breakfast from her Antebellum home.
Archbishop Andre Figurant had just finished Mass and was seeing his parishioners out.
Bastian Figurant is the identical twin of the Archbishop.
Ofelia was Elaine's half-sister and was the child of her father's second wife.
Rudy was both Ofelia and Elaine's cousin and he was coming to visit.
Elaine thought she had gotten rid of the family but Ofelia was here and Rudy was coming in a week or so. She did not want to share Shadow's Way and she wouldn't.
Lanita worked for the Archbishop for six years as his housekeeper
A mystery set in the south just before a big hurricane comes to land. I enjoyed it and it was complicated with surprises, twists, and turns. It was well writen and moved smoothly. The characters were well developed and interesting. The author did an excellent job keeping all the things together. It was coherent, laid out intelligently and kept your attention till the end. I don't usually read Mystery but this was a good one and I was glad I got the chance.

I received this book as a gift from my niece, and cannot thank her enough.
Ms. Francis’ novel Shadow’s Way, had me enthralled from page one, it kept me reading until so late into the night that I used a flashlight in order not to wake my husband.
I’ve always enjoyed reading gothic tales, but this one went beyond most that I had read. The synopsis was correct, past and present mingled and left me on the edge of my seat. Was G – G – Daddy a real paranormal experience or a figment of Elaine Chauvier’s imagination, which got worse as she sunk deeper into insanity?
I loved the various characters that Ms. Francis brought into play as needed to heighten the story. They were well rounded and interconnected in ways that one has to keep reading to get the full picture.

LIKE I USED TO DANCE - BY BARBARA FRANCES IS A FASCINATING TALE OF LIFE IN THE 1950'S AND FULL OF COMPASSION, HUMOR, AND SUSPENSE.

“Our kids, my, my, Gracie” laughed Bud. “Where did we go wrong? One marries God, another a Jew and the last one, the devil!”

Texas, 1951. The Wolanskys—Grace, Bud and their three grown children—are a close-knit clan, deeply rooted in their rural community and traditional faith. On their orderly farm, life seems good and tomorrow always holds promise.

But under the surface, it’s a different story. Grace is beset by dark memories and unnamed fears, calmed only by practicing a secret obsession. Their son Andy has said no to becoming a farmer like his dad and, worse, has fallen in love with a big-city Jewish girl. Youngest child Regina is trapped in a loveless marriage to an abusive, alcoholic husband. Even “perfect” daughter Angela’s decision to become a nun unleashes consequences no one could foresee.

And then Ceil Dollard breezes into town.

Ceil—wealthy, sophisticated, irrepressible—is like a visitor from Mars. She’s a modern woman. She drives a car and wears pants. She blows away tradition and certainty, forcing Grace to face her fears and brave a changing world. Through Ceil, Grace learns about courage and pleasure—but at the risk of losing Bud.

Barbara Frances’ sparkling, richly human novel takes you back to a time when Ike was president and life was slower, but people were the same as now. You’ll encounter a cast of characters storm-tossed by change, held together by love. Written with compassion, humor and suspense, Like I Used to Dance will charm you, warm you and even squeeze a few tears, from its opening number to the last waltz.

Don’t start this book before bedtime or you’ll be late to work! I love family sagas and this one swept me along. It’s about Grace, a warm, creative woman strong for her family but out of touch with her own needs. The place is rural Texas and the time is the fifties, when women were still trapped as homemakers. The family is Catholic and Grace’s daughters have their own struggles. Angela is unsure if she should become a nun and Regina has to decide if she’ll divorce her abusive husband. Grace herself is a talented artist who has never realized her potential. She develops a close bond with Ceil, a sophisticated transplant from LA who blows into the life of Grace and her family like a powerful wind. In the end, everything turn s out but nothing is the same. A great read!

I read The Tegen Cave and the prologue hooked me instantly, so it was read in two days. I'm not a fan of spiders, however author Goss has a heroine whose parents worked in the field of Arachnology, thus made spiders seem more lovable than what we normally think. More like crickets, if crickets released lethal poison. And during her parent's scientific study of spiders, it soon became known that their daughter was immune to all deadly spider venom. This sets the tone for book one, and is about as much as one needs to know to read book two, since it is a stand alone story and quickly catches readers up on Sara Jones who becomes Sally Jablon in this second of the series.

At the end of book one, our heroine learns she is a Tegen, and is adjusting to her unusual lifestyle while remaining committed to destroying an organized drug crime empire, run by her former lover, Conner Crussett. Her newfound ability of self-healing is just one of many Tegen tools that helps her track down and fight a sordid lot of criminals to whom death means nothing.

Now in Baton Rouge, with a new hair color, color contacts, and adopted southern twang, Sally is attempting to wipe out drug selling criminals whom she hopes will lead to demise of the Crussett family business. She has found a new romance with Brett, who is also a Tegen. Their love is bound by many things, but only Tegens understand all the rituals needed for them to sustain life, which strengthens their connection. But her mission in Louisiana get precariously sidetracked when Brett sends an out of control Tegen to accompany Sally in Baton Rouge. Out of control is putting it mildly as this young Tegen uses her venom infused nails to wipe out anyone she doesn't like. A punishable Tegen rule is to never use death by venom unless one is in a life threatening situation that cannot be survived by any other means.

When Conner Crussett shows up in Baton Rouge, Sally has to convince him she is NOT Sara, even though this is not an easy task as they were madly in love for several years. Sally is now the love "interest" of several men, whom she is using for more information and hoping they never realize her true identity. There are several twists in this story, and I could not figure out the villains even as I neared the end. What I believe was bound to happen, did not, so that was a head shaker. Without adding a spoiler, let me just say your mouth may drop open when stubborn, strong-headed, Sara Jones/Sally Jablon does what she has always done: Takes matters into her own hands. I cannot imagine what will happen in book three, but am looking forward to see how our heroine gets herself out of this one.

I think Karen Vaughan must have fun every time she sits down to write a story, Thankfully the humor and fun come through n her books and readers get a delightful read that also adds in murder, mystery and suspense. The novels with Laura and Gerry are a series that can also be read as stand alone books, I highly recommend all of them because readers will love the characters the author has created. In this story, murder and mystery connect to mob ties and the adventure is on. For me, I loved that a neighbor of Laura and Gerry's and a tenant in the building they manage is the one caught up in murder. Through the books, I have found, Stella is the character you love to hate. Grabbing a book by this author always guarantees a good read, a fun story and a murderous adventure

THANKSGIVING SPECIAL - A BOOK FOR THE AGES AND ALL RELATIONSHIPS - IT WILL HELP YOU THROUGH THE BAD AND MAKE THE GOOD BETTER - RELATIONSHIP BY A. WILLIAM BENITEZ

When I decided to write this book on relationship, my wife Barbara was surprised and cautioned me by saying that she would not dare write such a book because it was such a varied topic with so many nuances. That scared me because she is certainly more qualified to write about relationship than I am. I hesitated for a while.

Most of my writing had been on housing, business, woodworking, even publishing, but nothing on relationship. It's an expansive topic and I wasn't sure if my information would be of real value. I considered that all my books are based on first hand experience and realized that even though I'm not an expert, I have a life time of experience in relationship. Based on that I felt able to contribute something helpful to some readers and I feel good about this book.

The author did a fantastic job writing this book. In the first chapter he defines love, "a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person." If you have ever been in one then you know that it is a give and take in order to survive. Compromising is so important. It all depends on which stage of the game you are in. I am in my 40's so my experiences are different than those who are teenagers, whom could benefit from reading this book. They say that those that experienced it can give advice and tips of what they have learned to help you avoid tender mistakes. I especially liked the harmful relationships, mutual respect and boundaries chapters as I need to learn all of them once again. As a codependent it helps to keep me on track in my current relationships even if they are not love related, which includes friend, family and coworkers. Anyone could benefit from the helpful book with tips and thoughts of a personal experienced writer. Please post your review and hit Like. © 2014 Jackie Paulson

Have You Ever Made A Mistake That Keeps Coming Back To Haunt You? - TEGAN CAVE - BOOK 1 IN THE SERIES BY USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR INGE-LISE GOSS - GIVES NEW MEANING TO THE PHRASE "BLOOD-CURDLING"

Have You Ever Made A Mistake That Keeps Coming Back To Haunt You?

On the run from her ex-boyfriend’s powerful criminal family, Sara Jones hides in Billings, Montana. When she receives a mysterious package containing a hidden spider, people around her start dying from poisonous spider bites and she fears that the family has found her. Is it possible to escape their reach?

˃˃˃ From its gut-grabbing prologue to its explosive conclusion, Goss’s debut story gives new meaning to the phrase “a blood-curdling adventure.”

Life takes an even more bizarre turn when Sara seems to be not only immune to the spider venom, but also surrounded by a sinister group of people using spiders to incapacitate their prey. Even her new boyfriend starts acting suspiciously. Who can she trust?

To make matters worse Sara's twenty-fifth birthday approaches, and her dark heritage begins to emerge. She is forced to make a life-or-death decision. And somehow, she must find a way to deal with the crime family.

˃˃˃ An Imaginative Fantasy-Thriller That Will Stimulate Your Senses

Goss immerses the reader in a gripping tale in which spiders are trained to kill. To some, the story may seem far-fetched, and cult members eating the flesh of cadavers may seem abhorrent, but Dracula set that table long ago. Tegen Cave is sure to thrill anyone predisposed to the fantasy genre.
