“Yes, if we had all made other choices before the last real vote was cast, things would have been different. But now even those of us here who were once rich, must start again, and perhaps we can learn to compromise and find joy in differences. We once had a chance to clean the air, water, earth, to stop the never-ending wars against our fellow human beings. To learn none of us is perfect, and to rejoice in what was good, to build better.
“Won’t we be able to do that now?”
“In a way, but it will be without many of the conveniences we once depended upon. It will be a while before we have electricity, running water, and other such things. We will need to go back to the beginning, and it will be backbreakingly hard work. Nathan and his group will with luck bring us some time to get there.”
Thus, ended our democracy, the right of people to vote, the
rights of women, minorities, and all who were not rich, and the corporations
and oligarchs won.
